CCC: An ESG Strategy for Responsible Copper Mining
Copper mining faces serious reputational challenges, particularly around greenhouse gas emissions. Yet its role is vital in the green energy transition, providing essential elements like copper for electric vehicle batteries. Our client sought expertise to embed sustainability into their operations and communicate their ESG credentials to key stakeholders, including capital markets, regulators and local communities. Recognising that credibility in this space had to be earned through substance, not just messaging.
Impact
The client is now equipped with a full ESG and sustainability roadmap and assets to communicate their credentials across key channels. They have established a blueprint for community-focused impact programmes, including a training scheme to keep employment local rather than relying on outsourcing. They are also equipped to harness agricultural land and nurture farmer relations while delivering tangible environmental impact. A step-by-step data disclosure plan ensures they maintain a competitive edge with market participants.
Approach
We began with insight sessions to understand operational and financial goals, with stakeholder interviews providing a clear picture of on-ground realities. Through comprehensive research, we identified stakeholder expectations and gaps, engaging with experts across capital markets, local community groups, industry actors and governments. We then developed a strategic advisory note covering stakeholder engagement plans, an ESG and sustainability measurement and disclosure framework, a measurable impact programme aligned with the SDGs, and a multichannel communications strategy.
